We have exactly the same issue , but with 4 front-ends.
(I keep raising the max connection limit, when it is exhausted and the systems hang)
We are considering moving to CouchBase and already testing Redis, as alternatives.
I am not sure memcached was designed for that kind of clustering architecture. Hope someone prove me wrong.
