Group dependent quiz variants

This is a question from a colleague who is exploring the use of Moodle in exams.

He has a similar class size to mine (~ 460). He wants to hold (for reasons of logistics) the same exam in three different time slots (availability of rooms is an issue) one after the other. Calculated question types (can't figure out how to add more than 100 datasets) figure predominantly in this exam. Please ignore the issue of fairness that is a natural question to pose (how second and third groupings would benefit) for the moment. He will have a way to separate out the students for the entirety of the 3 hours.

He has say 18 groups of students (about 26 students per group). He wants to hold an exam for 6 groups at a time.

To avoid the mess in the gradebook, how can he set it up so that he can set up three quizzes (of equal difficulty) which are group membership dependent? The exam can then run over 3 hours (1 hour time limit for each set of 6 groups).

We are using Moodle 2.8 and conditional activities are enabled. However, I cannot figure out a way to advise him on this.
