You can't.  A theme is a plugin.  As the FAQ - https://moodle.com/cloud/faq/ - states under 'Does MoodleCloud allow plugins?' -> 'No. Our free MoodleCloud sites are made dead-simple with the use of the standard Moodle theme, More.'.

https://moodle.com/cloud/

To keep things manageable our sites do have some limits:

  • 50 users maximum.
  • 200Mb disk space
  • Core themes and plugins only
  • One site per phone number

You can pick MORE, and then customize it.  Site Admin | Appearance | Themes | MORE.

I use MORE on my small site, and I am very please with it.  However, I have customized it with CSS code.

Have any of you tried it out?  You cannot pick Clean or More you can only customise the main theme which is called 'moodlecloud' and has adverts.

I queried it in a tracker.

Yes - what Mary says. You can only customise the moodlecloud theme (which is a customised More theme anyway) The reason for this is that it has the adverts on it which are necessary to fund the free site. I agree it should be clearer in the admin section that you can't edit the other ones; the issue has been raised.
