Thanks, Juan - I actually found the problem, in that the instruction to switch the login type to be via the browser were located above the configuration steps and I'd missed the significance of that step.
In any case, I've upgraded to Moodle 3.3 now, although problems with the core OAuth 2 support means that I am still using the googleoauth2 plugin.
