Installing and upgrading help

Hi!
I am a beginner with moodle located austria.
We try to use moodle for our school and we already installed it. It works fine but...:
The main problem is, that our server hast safe-mode activated, and so users are not able to save files in the foder moddata... If I recreate the folder manually and change the permissions then it would work. This is a quite difficult solution, especially if we have 600 users...

Is there a workaround?
If you've got one, please explain it for dummys...
