I did a minor makeover for the GUI design of some parts of Dataform.
Pre-Header section (pattern objects)
I felt that the call-to actions were mostly textual in nature. So I decided to replace most of the call to action texts with Font Awesome icons (in the form of png image files). The icons have tooltips when a mouse-over is done on them.
Advanced Filter Form
After changes (simplified - less complexity, keeping in mind the novice user):
I removed (hid) the Description, Visibility and Page objects. I reversed the order of the Search and Sort options so that Search appears first. Lastly in the Search field N dropdown lists, I changed the text "and/or" to Blank. The reason I did this was to make the Advanced Filter GUI/form look as uncomplicated as possible as I am targeting novice users to be using the Advanced Filter to do advanced searches.
Here's the minimalistic take on the Advanced Filter:
I would remove the blank lines in between the rows of selection dropdown lists. if I knew which code allows me to do that.
My take on this is that I feel that the label words of Search fieldN and Sort fieldN clutter the real-estate. And that the drop-down selections lists provided enough visual cue and textual information to make sense of the GUI and call to actions. So what do you think?
I will share my code on my blog later this week.
