Thanks for your prompt fix Iñaki,
Changing the 'Remote username format' to %username% in the LDAP plug-in settings fixed the issue. '# wbinfo -u' was issuing a list of usernames with no domain info.
Also i didn't realise i had to set the 'auth' field in 'mdl_user' to ldap.
