Hi IE6 friends,

Gareth created https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-50660 to get rid of some IE6 styles we have in core. We are discussing about it as we don't support IE6 since we don't even know when (https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.6_release_notes#Known_problems or  https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.3_release_notes) and the result is that Moodle does not seem usable with it https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-50660?focusedCommentId=360412&page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-360412.

The last time that was discussed to remove these styles (https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-41973) it was decided that we would not remove them, but if Moodle is really unusable with IE6 we could discuss it again smile

We would like to hear if anyone is using it (or has to use it) and if you can contribute to the discussion. In any case, these changes would only affect master branch, so Moodle 3.0 onwards.

Thanks in advance.

+1 from me. In the last month stats, there are zero access to the OU's VLE from IE6!

More data at https://www.modern.ie/en-us/ie6countdown has more global data. Are the China numbers enough reason to pause for thought?

As somebody who just spent the last 6 years in China: no.

A large part of the IE6 users there are VMs with specific ActiveX controllers in place required for official governmental or banking purposes.

Our Finance department for example had iMacs with VMWare and a windows XP SP2 VM with IE6 just to access the government's payroll tax forms.  That counts as a 'hit' for IE6.

Everybody else is either mobile (xiaomi, or iPhone) or pirating Windows 7.

+1 from me too. We also see almost no sessions using IE6 so have no reason to support it.

Even if you do see sessions coming in using IE6, the users should be educated to upgrade to a better browser instead.

Hi Conn,

Tried that argument many times.  Does not work with institutions stuck with 'legacy' systems they cannot upgrade.  So can only not support a version of the browser if the full release notes stipulate 'minimum' version so that the institutions know they are 'really' stuck.

One legacy system deserves another, If somebody "has" to use IE6 then they "have" to use Moodle 1.9 mixed
