Turn on Debugging and then step through the process of making a backup.

Take a screen shot of the very first screen in the process.   Your screen shot shows the second step - what one sees there dependent upon the first screen options chosen.

If there is an issue with read/write permissions or something blocking, that might show in debugging but it also might show in apache error logs.   If the system is remotely hosted on a shared system, sometimes providers of such systems have restrictions on accounts and when customers reach those limits, etc. they have things set to deny and will NOT report such denials back to customers screens.

Don't think there's a tracker item.    Soooo ... if we don't find anything in debug or raw logs of server we'll have to bump this to someone!

I'm having this same issue. I'm the main site administrator and I'm not able to back up user data. I see the same thing that Inbar sees.

I turned on debugging and went through the backup process--here is what I see, from beginning to end:

Looks like a lot of errors although I'm not sure if any are out of the ordinary?

Did you check system defaults for backups to make sure user data is not locked out?

What version of Moodle?   Got command line access? In moodlecode/admin/cli/ there is a script called 'backup.php'.  Execute like: php backup.php --courseid=[CID] --destination=/home/m26backups/

Have any clues in moodledata/temp/backup/?   Any larger than 0 byte .log file contains info that might provide a clue.

Hi, I have the same Issue and the solution (with moodle 2.9.1. installed) was check all the options in general backup settings except: comments, bagdes,logs,histories and unchecked. The locked option in all of them unchecked too...and then all works fine, all it's backup in the correct way. My sharing cart with troubles too.

Wow, thanks Sonia! That actually worked.

I did a little more experimenting and all you need is the following:

Under Site Administration -> Courses -> Backups -> General Backup Defaults, you must set the defaults to at least have "include enrolled users" and "include activities" checked. If either of these are unchecked at the site-level, taking a course backup will not include user data, even if you check those two things on the individual course backup's page.


This definitely seems like a bug to me. I'm going to create a tracker issue for it.
