Is there a simple way to remove items from the user menu? (User menu is probably the wrong terminology -- see screenshot.) I would like it to just show the user profile option and logout. Thanks!

Simple = no. It's a matter of editing core_renderer.php.
A little commenting did the trick. Thanks for pointing me to the right place!
