Happy (almost) Autumn/Spring, everyone!
I'd be grateful for some direction now. My students like using
emoticons so much, they've decided to make some of their own!
I'd really like to encourage this.
I've managed to edit the lib/editor/popups/dlg_ins_smile.php
to include some of the new .gifs on the popup. 
Next, I'd like to assign keyboard shortcuts (inserttext) commands
to make the emoticons accessible in the chat, message and
discussion modules. I think I need to make these edits to add "alt"
properties as well.
I'd be very, very grateful if someone could tell me which file I'll
need to edit in order to do that.

I hope you can give us a peek at what your students did! My students did this years ago when all emoticons were text only. I was amazed at their creativity.
