Turn editing on for the front page. Pull the menu down for the block and click "Assign Roles." Then look for Permissions in the admin block. Remove the "View block" permission from all but the admin role.
That said, my teachers like being able to view who is on their courses at any one time. I would hear a number of complaints if I removed their permission to see it.
