Redirect the student to last page they viewed, when the login again

How can I redirect a user to the last page they visited when they login in again the next time. It would mean they don't have to visit the start page again, but can get to the course page they were viewing last.

you would have to update a cookie each page load and then read that cookie on login... I'm still learning cookies myself, so I won't attempt to supply code..
