Hi all,

I did not realize my question would post so much debate.  I have used blackboard collaborate as a student before and is good tool to do online teaching.  So back to topic I gather that most people tend to use:

1. Blackboard Collaborate (Paid)

2. WizIQ (Paid)

3. bigblubutton. (Open Source)

Any other open source projects that teachers use besides these?

Regards
Terry

Hi Terry,

I've used Blackboard Collaborate (Elluminate) a fair amount and liked it.

Something worth noting: I haven't yet seen a media-server based web conferencing platform that is not paid. Many offer fremium pricing (free for smaller numbers of participants and restricted features/options, e.g. https://www.meetingburner.com/ ) but if you want to use them professionally, you normally have to pay.

Case in point, BigBlueButton http://bigbluebutton.org/ software is indeed free and open source so you can download it and install it on your own media server. If you have the expertise and the time to do this and manage it yourself, that's great and you can save yourself some money. However, for most people, this isn't an option so they're looking at a hosting service or commercial support of some kind, i.e. http://bigbluebutton.org/commercial-support/

There's also more options to add to the list:

There may be more, so it's worth checking the Moodle plugins database for webinar service integration modules: https://moodle.org/plugins/index.php

I hope this helps! smile

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the information. I will be setting up a bigbluebutton server for testing and would take a look at open meetings as well.

Regards

Terry
