Essential theme: problem with forums

Essential theme: problem with forums

I am loving the essential theme. Congratulations and many thanks to the developers.

I am having a problem however, and wondering what I'm missing:

Students are not able to post or reply within my forums! (kind of defeats the whole purpose)

I've checked permissions and students definitely have the permissions to post.

I am talking about a "general use forum" in auto-subscription mode.

Anybody have this problem?

I am of course not an expert on this.

But I predict what the answer will be from one of the theme gurus:

  1. Switch to another core theme: do you still get the the error?
  2. Turn debugging on, and see if there is an error.

Thibault,

  1. Are you certain you are using the Forum activity and not the News forum?  I presume you are because you said students have posting permission, but just checking anyway. Students cannot post/reply to the News forum.
  2. Another common error I see is that the forum is configured for groups, but no groups have been formed.
  3. Are students enrolled in the course with a Student role?  It is strange, but I have seen students enrolled in a course, but without an assigned role.
  4. I use Essential and Forums work fine in my case.  Do you have the most recent (and correct) version of Essential for your Moodle installation?

I checking all the above does not solve your problem, I'm willing to take a look at your site if you can provide a login (do so through Messaging).

Thanks,

Floyd

Also, following up on Derek's suggestion, have you tried using a different theme?  Does the problem still exist if you use the Clean theme?

Embarrassingly, it was simply point #1.

I wasn't clear on the distinction between the different types of forums.

I'm now adding simple discussion forums throughout the website, and it seems to be working perfectly well.

Thanks!

This is nothing to do with Essential, but more to do with your Moodle set up.

First of all I think you need to see that you have set the Forum up correctly.

I am not familiar with all the Admin settings but I dare say that there will be one somewhere that you need to put a tick in the checkbox to allow comments.

So go to the page where the forum is and click on Edit settings.

Cheers

Mary
