Hosting a Moodle Moot in India

Hi - I am Michelle from Dahanu, Maharashtra.

We run Tamarind Tree (www.tamarindtree.org), an organisation that runs an english medium school for the local tribal children here. We are ardent open source users and believers and have been dabbling in moodle for the last two years.

I am really happy to say that our Virtual Learning Environment is up online at www.tamarindtree.org.in and is being used by first generation learners in the age group of 8-10 years. We run a Primary school.

Given that we are on the far end of the digital divide (our kids obviously do not have any internet at home), we are looking at setting up a wireless mesh network to ensure that kids get this content at home.

While that work in underway we are busy trying to populate our courses and moodle site.
Our main challenge is getting teachers to develop courses given the limited digital knowledge and tools they have. We are also looking for volunteers and interns to support our efforts.

I am looking to meet other Moodlers in India and given the number of Moodle Moots in other countries am happy to start a discussion on hosting one in India too.

I am happy to coordinate and take this forward.

Hi Michelle

What a wonderful website http://www.tamarindtree.org is!

The Tamarind Tree's flowers are beautiful and so is your noble vision to reach the marginalised tribal children with education and love.

May your efforts bear much fruit in due season! Here's wishing you all the best with using Moodle and through Him, may your hard work pay off in the fulfilled potential and future of the young ones in your charge.

Hi

I am from Mumbai India , and have been with Moodle since 5 years now . I feel the scenario in India right now is that there is so much potential growth for elearning and Moodle , but somehow people are still not much aware of this

We have 2 Moodle partners in India eAbyas and BallisticLearning , a Moodle Moot would really be nice to spread awareness about elearning and Moodle. It would also be lovely to interact with fellow Moodlers

Hi Michelle and Farhan,

Sorry to join this thread so late. I am the author of "How to use Moodle 2.7" and staying in Hyderabad, India and also feels the need to have a Moodle Moot in India to increase awareness about Moodle and Elearning.

I feel that both our Moodle Partners are not open to market Moodle in India, so definitely we need to step up and make awareness about Moodle.

Re: Hosting a Moodle Moot in India

Hi, Jaswinder and all.

I'm glad to hear enthusiasm for running a MoodleMoot in India.

At present I am busy organising the Australian and US MoodleMoots. We started some guidelines earlier, but we've put those on hold until after these MoodleMoots so we can put our experience into them.

That shouldn't stop you from starting to begin planning for a MoodleMoot. I think the first step will be finding a group of people who can work together to plan the event and make it happen. Please involve Moodle Partners in your country. They may not be able to run an event like this alone, but it is usually within the interest of Parters to be involved.

Some MoodleMoots are run by Moodle Partners, some by independent Moodle groups within countries and some are run by universities. Some are run at almost zero cost to participants while others are run with a modest registration fee to cover costs.

Give yourselves plenty of time to plan. Consider where you could hold it and when, keeping in mind other MoodleMoots happening around the world and local education conferences that may conflict.

Keep us informed regarding your efforts.

Jaswinder,

Not a very experienced Moodler but would love to participate as a user and educator.

Have just moved to Delhi from Chennai to start up a centre for specialised studies and the first decision even as we are negotiating the campus location is to rely on Moodle and open source.

Look forward to the moot.

Our website is just registered http://environics.edu.in and will be up once we learn moodle more and we get through the red tape of our Governments.

Thanks, Jaswinder,

It's a good idea, and being an optimistic Sagittarian, I believe it will actually happen.

I have been teaching for about 15 years and using Moodle for about 4 years now  - for running my online copywriting course (but haven't contributed to the technology/development part).

I will post this event on my FB and other social networks.

One specific point I'd like to raise in this Forum is that no matter how interesting a course one  develops on Moodle, it's value to the user is entirely dependent on good Instructional Design principles being followed in putting the course together.

Perhaps we should get one or more ID experts to speak at the Indian Moodlemoot, too.
I can organize one, if you wish.

Cheers!

My suggestion:

1. Get a .edu.in domain from Ernet.in . That adds prestige to your college. Your college is eligible for the extension .edu.in if it has a recognised degree from some university. you will have to upload recognition proof, address proof & registration.

. Go to keytoschool.org and get a free moodle trial site. With a .edu domain you can get 80% discount on whichever plan you choose after the trial.

Best wishes

Hi Sushil,

Thanks for coming back on the forum thread after almost a month. I feel that it is very childish from your side, coming after a month and bluntly deciding that it will be only held in the cities where Moodle partners are located without speaking to me on the subject.

I am very clear on my goals to conduct this MoodleMoot - It will be organized in the city which will get maximum preferred venue votes from the candidates. And secondly, I don't want to organize it for once, instead I want to make it an annual event being organized in different cities every year giving chance to all cities to host the event.

Let's organize first this event in the preferred city, afterwards we all can decide for the city for next event.

For the live beaming facility - I don't want to make the event a mess by introducing the live streaming as 1. It will discourage to users to join the event in person 2. Meeting at a common point can make people more social and learn new things.

If all the events can be organized through live beaming than what is the requirement of having a MoodleMoot, we can do it from all our offices and watch/join through YouTube or some other service.

So, it is my humble request to please help me in organizing this event as despite multiple requests from this forum thread I am not getting any help from both Moodle Partners. I want to make the event a huge success in the very first time with all Moodle community members of India participating in the event.

Hope you understand my concerns and help me in organizing the event.

Sushil,

I just hope you are taking it seriously.

India never had Moodle Moot earlier in history, I wonder how you plan to host this event simultaneously in two places, do you expect so many people that they won't fit in one place? I really see no reason for having this event simultaneously at two places. May be you could explain a bit to all of us.

Even if you plan to host event in two places, they should not happen simultaneously, maybe you can plan it at one plan for now and after sometime at second place. I will be happy to join you all at both places.

Both you and Ballistic Learning can make this event special if you two work together along with rest of our friends here.

Adding to what Jaswinder and Jai said , I also feel we should not have the Moot done simultaneously in two cities. The whole purpose is to meet each other , otherwise we already had the iMoot. Also will appreciate that along with maximum votes we also let feasibility (cost, sponsors , travel for other participants ) be a deciding factor for the city .

Hi All,

This is Jayakrishnan from IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay. I had received a message from Jaswinder regarding MoodleMoot on 10 July, but since I have not been regular to Moodle.org, failed to notice it.

The idea of MoodleMot is a good one, and I think atleast 6-8 people from my Department would be ready to come. Since IITB uses moodle as its LMS, I will try to spread the word within the campus and see whether I can get the support of IITB student and faculty community for the same. Do let me know if you need any other help from my side in organizing this event. I will be more than happy to assist.

Also I do agree with Jaswinder, Jai and Farhan. An event like this gives Moodle users opportunity to meet each other and socialize. I hope we all can meet soon as MoodleMoot India attendees.

Regards

Jk

P.S: In case Mumbai gets maximum votes I can try for our Department to organize it in IITB campus (however this does not mean I am not open to other cities smile ).

Hi Jayakrishnan

I am so happy to see your messages ,since I was always wondering it would be wonderful if we could get IIT Mumbai involved in this , I had sent an email to Mr Nagesh Karmali however I did not get a reply.

Thank you for your offer for hosting in IIT campus , it would be of immense help , now time to try harder to get more Mumbaikars to vote

Hi, Michelle,

It is so nice to learn about your plans of organizing MOODLE MOOT in India.

I am from Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Sewagram, Wardha, Maharashtra. Our website is www.mgims.ac.in . And, the link to the MOODLE server is www.mgims.ac.in/classroom .

Although I am new to MOODLE, over the last 6 months we have initiated developing an e-learning platform for MGIMS, Sewagram. We have a core team of approx 15 faculty members who are taking lots of interest in developing course in MOODLE for our medical undergraduates.

Some of us would be interested in participating in the MOODLE MOOT.  I thought that MOODLE MOOT is mainly organized online and people from anywhere could participate in this activity.  I want clarity on this before I circulate the information to other members of our team.

Regards,
Subodh

Hi Subodh,

Thanks for showing your interest in the MoodleMoot India. I am glad that a lot of faculty members are showing interest in developing Moodle courses.

MoodleMoots are events held around the world, focusing on collaborating and inspiring all users of the Moodle. Basically these events are meant to socialize all Moodle users in your country/locality/area/group. Generally it includes speakers, workshops, demonstrations and other presentations, motivated for the community and the benefit of Moodle.

iMoot is one Moot which is completely online and anyone can participate from any location.

We are planning for the first one to bring all Moodle users from India on a single platform so that we can learn from each other, share our resources.

Jaswinder Singh

Thanks for getting this going Jaswinder.. it will take a couple of moodle moots in India to get the ball rolling.. the first one is always tough. Looking forward to it.

The reason I am writing is that I strongly feel that institutions like IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) , NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling)  and Commonwealth of Learning  (COL) type of institutions should be invited and should attend the Moodle Moot India, given their massive outreach.

At my end - I am informing several institutions that I know of - but I think we all need to do out bit to broaden the reach of open source learning and teaching.

Thank you Michelle,

I also agree that all institutions like IGNOU, NIOS and COL are doing a great thing by providing education in remote areas to improve literacy. I also agree that we should invite them to attend the MoodleMoot India, Can you please help me in inviting them for the MoodleMoot.

Thank you for reaching out to a lot of institutions, I am also contacting many institutions on my end. Can we have more volunteers who can invite other great institutions who are using Moodle or wants to use Moodle to attend this MoodleMoot?

Thank you for you support.
