This request reminds me of something we played with a few years back but for some reason haven't carried it forward (we had it working at one time but I think when editing changed we just didn't bother reimplementing it as we didn't feel the need).
Not sure how it would stand nowadays but have a look through this for a structured rundown and this forum thread for how it evolved. It might give you some ideas.
