Not sure where you're stuck, but if you just ran the default installation it should be installed and enabled. Just create a course, turn editing on, and add a chat activity. It also seems that in many situations you might have to go into the chat module settings (configuration then modules), and change the ip address form the loop back of 127.0.0.1 to the actual IP of your server. Not sure of that though.
