Fatal error: Call to undefined function: session_name() in /srv/www/htdocs/moodle/moodle/lib/setup.php on line 299

I am running Suse Enterprise server 9.  Mysql, php 4.4.  I followed the posted install instructions pretty much to the letter.  The servers appear to be running, far as I can  tell.  When I navigate to the moodle site, I get the above referenced error.  line 299 in setup.php is:
       session_name('MoodleSession'.$CFG->sessioncookie);


Any ideas?
