Chat to voice-chat conversion?

I have no use for the “Chat module”, yet it is perfectly integrated into moodle with links to “Calender” and “Upcoming Events”. This infrastructure would lend itself to be used for online tutorials and I wonder whether it would be possible to marry a VoIP program into this module. The students would click on the button “Click here to enter the chat now” but would link to the VoIP program/website instead. In this way we could utilise the Calender and the Upcoming Event Box.

Unfortunately my computer knowledge is very limited, but perhaps someone has an idea, if and how this could be done.

Looking forward to some suggestions

Dear Hansruedi Lorenz,
Please see the Moodle for Lanuage Teaching course for discussion of voice chat. The biggest problem seems to be the technology. One needs Java, Flash and flash communications server, or client side applications it would seem. Gong looks good but it is java.

Hi Timothy

I have played with a few programs and think that it will work, providing one is prepared to pay.

At this stage I think I will use Voxwire http://www.voxwire.com/

It costs US$30 a month for 10 seats which is affordable.

A relatively new kid on the block is Wolf Communications it's still a beta version but it's free for a 3 people room. Not that this is of much help for teaching, but it's not bad to have a bit of a play and get the feel for it. http://chat.wolf-voip.com/my/wolf/#

The issue for me is now, how I can incorporate this technology into Moodle?
