I've everything to learn about MySQL, however I can suggest one possibility of saving space would be to empty mdl_backup_log and reduce the loglifetime variable in the maintenance section of Administration >> Configuration >> Variables. (Source: Eloy's advice Re: mdl_backup_log table)
