Where can I see how this system handles multilanguage? Is there a demo showing how efficiently it handles it?

Go to http://demo.moodle.net/ and give it a go. The demo site has 4 language packs loaded by default. You can add more.
If you want to see handling of teacher-provided multilingual materials, you can add some activity and follow the instructions for multilang filter to add content (see Multi-language_content_filter and admin/setting/filtersettingmultilang). You need to activate the "Multi-Language Content" first in the site settings since it is off by default.
