G'day everyone,
I have a blind student in one of my online courses and the Chat module doesn't seem to like the Jaws Screen Reader. Does anyone know of any chat software we could use that integrates nicely with Moodle?
Thanks heaps
Do you have any idea where the incompatability lies? Is it perhaps the frames or the javascript refresh? There's not much to the Chat technologically so it shouldn't be too hard to fix it so that it works with screen readers.
Hi!
I did some coding in chat recently. The present chat is not accessible. Reason is the various Javascript tricks aimed at improving scalability and responsivness.
I agree that we should not forget the accessibilty if we ever start rewriting chat module. But I personally know very little about accessibility
If you need some solution now, you can try ACollab - the team around ATutor is specialising on accessibility Maybe it could be even integrated with Moodle if you find some good PHP hacker....

Not to mention that ignoring accessibility in working to improve performance is becoming as dangerous as ignoring security.
Increasingly all public institutions or ones that recieve public funds are being required to use accessible software.

i think the problem is the refresh.
Every time the main page regreshes, Jaws starts reading from the top of the page.
Maybe the solution is simply to have the chat scroll the other way...

hi.
its marvin here.
the main problem is that the graphic keeps refreshing and when i hit the space bar which turns form mode on, and start typing in the edit window, it jumps out of forms mode and says cannot find any more frames.
the main fix to this problem, is to stop the frames refreshing, and stop the input edit window refreshing all the time.
or maybe implment the accessable chat on the moodle, and also have a accessable version of skype.
what do you think about this?
it would require some scripting in the jaws programming language .
if there are any bright jaws scripters for moodle, then let me know.
cheers Marvin.
