Is there a way to disable students receiving emails when they receive a badge?
There is going to be a bulk upload of badges for people who have already passed courses from our other system and we don't want the users to get tonnes of emails during this process.

There are several settings.
On user level, have a look at "Home ► My profile settings ► Messaging". There are notifications for a badge recipient which each student can disable.
On admin level, there are badges settings under "Home ► Site administration ► Plugins ► Message outputs ► Default message outputs".
I hope this is what you are looking for. Unfortunately, it is not possible to turn off recipient notification for an individual badge.
