Thanks, Martin for the reply.  Our web host (Brinkster) supports everything we need except uncompressing. So what we do is download Moodle from moodle.org to our puny PC, unzip it there, and then use a free FTP utility to upload the files.  I did this last night and it took 12 hours, via high speed broadband cable modem.  The good news is that I did not have to do any restarts because of timeouts.  We do moodle backup-restores on Brinkster, so we deduced from that, that whatever internal moodle programming that zips and unzips data is functional on Brinkster (pclzip??).  There must be a less painful way but since we are not PHP wizards, we will just have to live with the long upload time, unless you have a brainstorm.  (Brinkster is Windows 2003 and PHP 4).
