Have any of you setup a VERP setting in cPanel or/and it's Exim; that will make it possible to e-mail back to Moodle?
The nearest documentation, I have found so are these:

Hello! I was wondering if you had any advice for what I'm experience. I set up Gmail as the server to use for incoming mail settings. When I run the cron.php, it seems to get stuck connecting to imap.gmail.com:993. Has anyone else reported this?

Hello Heather - I am really not knowledgeable on this; I just followed instructions from the developer, Andrew Nicols.. I don't think it matters whether they are in lower or upper case but for mine I just put imap.gmail.com and I didn't add any numbers afterwards but presumably you have an organisational reason for doing that? I don't know what the 933 is for.
Thank you, Mary. The 993 is the the port number that is recommended by Google and I thought it might help to be as specific as possible, even though that port number seems to be the one that everyone else uses too. Perhaps Andrew is reachable?

I am experiencing that my replies end in my cPanel catch-all e-mail account and Moodle will not pull the reply into the forum...

It looks like cPanel does not support e-mail subaddressing out of the box. There's a few discussions around, but this one on the cPanel forums provides a workaround which you may want to check out.

I am wondering if it's the host problem. I will follow up with them.
There's one other thing I'm wondering about... when Moodle was upgraded by my host, the upgrade did not include the Enable Private Files option for some reason. That was a little befuddling. Any ideas?

Did you fill out any credentials at your Moodle 2.8 smtp fields - or did you let them empty?

Jens- I didn't alter any of the default email/SMTP settings, which were blank anyway.

It really depends on how your hosting provider has things configured, but it should not be necessary to fill out any SMTP details as standard. Any properly configured host will have a Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) configured on the system itself which all system utilities can use to send mail. Moodle will try to use your local MTA if not configured to use any other SMTP server.
