I have a discussion forum with 3 separate groups and with approximately 8 persons in each group. Often I need to enter a new discussion topic, which is different for each group, in preparation for a course topic not designed to have an email alert sent out until a couple days after creating the three separate discussion topics for the three separate groups. What I've been doing up till now is to keep the Visible eye for the discussion group activity Off until I was ready to send out the email alerts letting individual group members (for groups 1, 2 and 43) know that the discussion group is henceforth open for business. But recently that seems not to have worked. Could someone please let me know everything I need to know about how email alerts are sent out with respect to the eye being open and closed, and if there's another, better approach to what I want to do in terms of delayed email alerts being sent out to signal a discussion group is ready for people to participate in it.
Gary, I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Are you using Moodle's "group" features? Awhile ago, I had two sections of a course and I wanted to combine them into one Moodle course. However, I wanted to keep their discussion separate. I accomplished this by using groups. It was a little tricky to set up. I added another "me" user and had to modify the role a little, but it worked. Students in one group did not see posts from students in the other group.
