We had a series of dataforms that we then compiled into one booklet by using the 'dataform view' field.

Yes. This has just been completed and is forthcoming for Dataform 2.8.6 or higher.
The main challenge with this field type is the restore where references need to be resolved. The upcoming release has been tested only with intra-Dataform views, that is, the Dataform view field is used to reference a view in the same Dataform. This use case is also the only one that can be used with a Dataform preset, b/c the Dataform preset contains only one instance.
Restoring inter-Dataform references has not been tested yet. In such cases backup/restore cannot be done from within the Dataform but in the course level and all the referenced Dataform instances which do not exist in the target location, must be included. There's work to do to support that properly and so it might take some time.

Excellent news Itamar (and thanks for working on this).
Any timeline for when 2.8.6 will be arriving (or would it be possible to have access to the code to 'test' for you - GitHub doesn't seem to have the code for this yet).
Would be great to test this before a new cohort arrives in September. We have around ten separate dataforms for students to complete across a year and then one 'complete dataform' that is just used for viewing the complete document and this is where we use the dataform view field to bring across the other views into one place for students and supervisors to access).

A couple of days. I need to re-release Dataform 2.8.6 so as to include a certain fix and then I will release the the dataformview field. The field requires Dataform 2.8.6.

The dataformview field is now available from git at https://github.com/itamart/moodle-dataformfield_dataformview. It requires Dataform 2.8.6. No documentation yet. Feel free to ask questions. Any feedback is welcome.
