Hi, as part of a development for the Assignment Module, Joan Codina has implemented a new function for the HTML editor that allows the user to monitor how many words there are in the text at any given time. At first we thought about having this possibility only within the Assignment Module, but talking with Martin Dougiamas, he suggested that this would be most useful as part of the HTML editor itself. I think he is right because, apart from being useful in general, the ability to easily monitor the word length in the HTML editor can be used, for instance, by teachers that want to establish a recommended word limit for, say, forum postings or for any other activities that involve writing using the HTML editor.

Joan codina has set up a test site in http://parles.upf.es/TEST/. The login is 'teacher' and the password is also 'teacher'. This test site is mainly intended for the testing of a particular extension of the assignment module that allows teachers to specify a maximum number of words that is allowed or recommended for a written assignment. We encourage you to play around with this module and tell us what you think. However, if you are only interested in the word count function, the easiest way to see it in action is simply to post a message in any of the forums available in the the first block of the 'Assignments' course. You'll see the word counter at the bottom of the HTML editor, to the left of the 'Path' indicator. We are looking forward to hearing from you.
