Users not restored with Moodle1.5 backup

I used backup with users data, but in restoring this message appeared:

No users were found!

Creating metacourse info Creating categories and questions

Copying user files
Copying course files
Creating messages info

and all users disappeared.
I have done the same process before with moodle1.4 with no problem.
any ideas?

I found users(students) in backup file but they were not enrolled (as in original course) so I enrolled them manually.

Hi Abbas,

I've examined your backup file and it's completely missing the USERS section (where all the users are stored), so the message in restore is 100% correct because the file doesn't contain such info.

So, the problem seems to be in your 'original' course (where you have created the backup file). It's really strange because your backup has tons of references to users (logs, groups...) so those users should be there, more if you've selected "ALL" as the users backup policy (it involves to backup EVERY user in your server.

I only can imagine three situations where this can happen:

- You have deleted the user table and currently it hasn't records at all, but then you couldn't login or execute backups.
- Your user table have some king of problem in the original site (corrupted, need repair) and backup has failed silently.
- There is some problem in the backup process (although it hasn't been reported before now) related to the USERS section.

Anyway, is your ORIGINAL site available? Can you check if such table has records and seems to work properly? Can you try to create other backup file? How many user records are detected in the backup process...

I had actually the same problem and it took me some time to find the reason:

This problem comes up when you do a backup with ALL users (not just course).
Internally, the options are assigned to numbers:
0 means all users
1 means course users
2 means no users

Unfortunately, in backup/backup_execute.html on line 193 there is:

 if ($status && $preferences->backup_users) {

So, if $preferences->backup_users is zero, the statement will not be entered and no users are backed up at all!

I propose to rearrange the meaning of the numbers, so that zero means "no users" and 2 means "all users".

For now, I just changed the mentioned line to

 if ($status && $preferences->backup_users || $preferences->backup_users == 0) {

so that a backup with all users of the site is possible. I know this is not the way it should be!

Oh, oh!

Reviewing code changes it seems that the problem was introduced a lot of months ago and nobody has detected it until now.

That line should be, simply:

if ($status) {

This is because, at this stage of the backup, the backup_user_info() function just output to XML the collection of users calculated in previous stages (they have been stored in backup temporary tables some steps before) so that condition isn't needed at all!

Just changing it both in 1.5.3+ and 1.6. Should be available in 24 hours from now.
