I'm sure I made some kind of classic rookie mistake, so I'm asking for help. I have a class of 20. In a peer review activity, I wanted students in small groups, where they would be reading the papers of other folks in that same group.
I created groups, enabled them in Workshop, and then allocated drafts. I thought we were good, but then I realized in class that students had actually been assigned drafts of students who were not in their group.
What did I do wrong?
I think I just saw what I did, but I want to ask for confirmation.
I created groups at the course level, as I should have.
In the Workshop settings, I selected visible groups--again, all good.
In the "grouping" dropdown, however, I did nothing, which I believe was my problem. I enabled it to use groups but didn't actually select the grouping I had created. Correct?
One other thing, which I don't think was the issue but want to make sure. At the course level, I didn't change the default setting for groups from "none" to "visible groups." My understanding was that I could leave this setting at "none" and still be able to enable groups for individual activities. Correct? Or should I have changed the overall course setting as well?
I think separate groups is the setting you want.
Groupings are groups of groups. They are used to make content available to only a subset of students.

To let the Random allocator assign submissions in this manner (within groups only), the Workshop has to be switched to the separate groups mode, as Rob says. Grouping is not necessary here and I would suggest not to set it unless you really need it.
