Under My home /My profile settings /Messaging I found I can turn off Assignment Notification emails.
I would like to be able to do this on a per-course basis, as I'm also an administrator for many courses (even though I'm not teaching them) and get these emails. I have to remember to turn notifications back on when I start teaching a course again.
