When you try to run or install Moodle does it work or do you have problems?

Which version of Moodle?

Hello Patricia,

I looked through your phpinfo, and it seems to meet all the basic requirements for latest version of Moodle:

Thanks for going through it, as I don't know anyone else who knows what any of this means.

I have 2.6 now, I figured I had better get that set up on the new server properly (so my students can get back into their work) before trying to upgrade it.

My issues: I have no theme, for one thing, just a white page with the login section. Also, my passwords are no longer working, so I can't get into Moodle to see what else is going on.

Consider double-checking that your database is using "utf8_unicode_ci" for collation. I am not sure if this would show in your phpinfo output.

It was in "general" not "unicode" so I fixed that. Thanks.

But I am still wondering, did that fix the problem?

Well, by the time I figured out that what I did wasn't actually fixing the problem and googled how to change each table over the time to edit had expired. I am in the process of changing over all the tables in two databases. So I'll let you know.

If you know of a way to do this quickly I'd sure love to hear it. smile

You can change the whole database at once.  Google Moodle and utf-8 for instructions.  Once that is done - report back with exact issues.  Make sure that your permissions and ownership are all correct on the new server.

Hi, Emma --

Unfortunately I didn't see your note before I had paid a fellow on Fiverr to do it for me. But I don't see any real difference in the problem from making this change. I still cannot log in.

As has been requested, I made a new thread about the problem here.

Rick, it has not helped the problem so far as I can tell.

Can you tell us a little more about your "server"?  It's OS, is it a computer, or a VPS, or hosted server?  Are you doing the OS install yourself?  If it is a VPS, who is the company that hosts it?

As I think I have read from your earlier posts, you had a working copy of Moodle and now want to move it to a new server.  What version of Moodle was the original?

Oops... might I be seeing that you are using Bluehost?  Right?  But I am still not sure if this is a hosted server or a VPS?  Have you been seeking support from Bluehost?  Are you doing a one-click install?

I am still working on it. Is it one of these?

Re: Need help interpreting phpinfo()

Hi, Rick --

This is what happened:

I was using Moodle 2.6 on Bluehost, which was originally a "one-click" install (which turned out to be way more than one click!). The site was working fine before any changes were made.

I didn't know that Bluehost allowed multiple domains on an account, so when I learned this I merged this account with another and closed out the original domain that Moodle was on, putting Moodle on a folder in my other domain and making that a subdomain of my website. I also changed the name of the subdomain.

So this was mainly (as I saw it) a matter of changing the name that Moodle used to figure out where it was. But I think I must have either missed a name change on some file or messed up a file somehow, because I can't log in.

As requested, I have made a new thread about that problem here.

I don't know what VPS means so I can't answer that.

Patricia, you appear to have a Bluehost "hosted server", probably one that costs around $5/month or might even be free.  I have two of these hosted servers, and even have Moodle 2.6 running on one (experimentally).

First, if you haven't done so, try to make a backup of your moodledata folder and backup your mysql database.

You are doing some significant changes (movements) of your Moodle.  Quite honestly, I haven't tried moving a moodle installation to a subdomain, but it should work.  However, you have to make sure that your config.php file has the right settings pointing correctly to your moodledata folder, and your mysql database.  This could be tricky.  It might help if you post your config.php file, and also let us know where your new moodle is located (http://moodle.???.com, for example).

In your Moodle movement, did anything happen to your database?   Is it the same name?

You also need to make sure that all of your folder "rights" are correctly set.  Do you know what you have?

Starting your Moodle with a one-click installation leaves a bit of uncertainty as to what you really have, and it could take a little effort to get it working again.

Do you know where your moodledata folder is?  Is it in public_html, or is it up one level.  Some of these one-click installs will put it in public_html, which may present some issues moving it into a subdomain.

Have you talked with Bluehost to see if they can help?

Re: Need help interpreting phpinfo()

I have posted my current config.php file here.

My databases are the same name as before.

I made backups of everything before doing the merger in the first place. smile

My moodle school is at http://studio.edible-landscape-design.com which is actually http://studio.pattyloof.com

My moodledata is in public_html.

What should my folder rights be? As you know, there are many folders in Moodle. Which folders are you referring to?

I have not talked to Bluehost yet since this seemed to be a Moodle problem rather than a server/hosting issue.

In your config.php file remove the reference to phpinfo():   It's on line two.   When removing, it's ok to leave a blank line there at line two.

Since that's something that the server will execute (and it does when accessing the site), the error that follows makes sense:

Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /home1/edibled1/public_html/studio/config.php:2) in /home1/edibled1/public_html/studio/lib/classes/session/handler.php on line 42

The :2 above is referring to line 2 of config.php.

I am not the best at advising about all the ways to install moodle, but others here, like Ken are.

First, moodledata should not be in public_html.  This is a security problem.

I am not sure what happens to the database entries, moodle, or even moodledata when you move a moodle to a subdomain.  For example, I see that your moodledata is in public_html, but up from /home1/edibled1/.  I am not sure if this would need to be modified since your moodle might now be in a different folder.  So I am running out of knowledge about subdomain installations.

I have my moodledata up one level, so it is not on the open Internet.  My rights are 777 (but this might be a little to lenient.)

As you pursue help here on moodle.org, consider doing the same with Bluehost (in parallel).  Bluehost, for example, might be able to quickly fix the problem.

Re: Need help interpreting phpinfo()

Hello Patricia,

Given that this is a new issue, please open a new thread for it. Also consider presenting more facts and background in your post, as recommended in the moodle.org site policies:

https://moodle.org/mod/page/view.php?id=7080

At the very least, please provide:

1. Moodle, OS, web server, database server and PHP versions.

2. Any error messages you get; enable Debugging to get more detailed info.

https://docs.moodle.org/26/en/Debugging

3. A screenshot if possible.

Re: Need help interpreting phpinfo()

Hi Patricia,

The best course of action is:

1. Check about the minimum requirements for the latest Moodle version:

https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.7_release_notes#Requirements

You may see about other releases' requirements via the links provided in the Releases block at this page:

https://download.moodle.org/releases/latest/

2. Depending on the type of service you have (shared, dedicated, administered vs. not administered, etc.), ask your hosting provider or a knowledgeable friend to help you setup the server (email, ftp, database, PHP, etc.).

3. Once you have a ready-for-web working server, please read the required section(s) of the Moodle Installation documentation page and follow the instructions.

https://docs.moodle.org/27/en/Installation

4. If you then have any doubts or problems, please ask in this forum.
