Dynamic Assignment Dates

Dynamic Assignment Dates

Hi everyone

We use Moodle extensively for classroom and online delivery of courses and assessment.

Over the last couple of years we have encountered a few edge case issues that I've not found solutions for. Well at least one of them.

Here are the issues... I hope you can help out. Especially with my Fully Online problem.

Assessments and Dynamic Enrolments

The assessment modules work well in the traditional environment (students commence on same date) as the assessment modules give the ability to set a due date.

There are some edge, and no so edge cases that we encounter problems with:

  • Fully Online Students (Dynamic Start Date)
  • Late Starter Students (Traditional Enrollment)

Fully Online

Students are dynamically enrolling.

Due dates at the moment would have to be left off to allow them to attempt the assessments as needed.

The ability to set a due date based on the start date would facilitate the use of scheduled assessments.

Is there a plugin that adds an option to the assignments to set an assignment due date based on a number of days after the enrollment date.

Late Starter Students

These students would need to have the assessment deadlines adjusted based on when the started.

This would probably be best achieved by a "due date adjustment" for each student in this situation.

The latter (Late Start) would not be a problem to complete manually as we might get two or three late starters per course.

The former (Online) is a problem as there could be hundreds of enrollments per day.

If you set extensions for the assignments based on groups it will sort this problem for you. Just create a group for traditional students and a group for online students and set an extension for one group and not the other which will allow you set different days. In your example you may need several groups to cater for the online students that enrol at different dates. FYI extensions can also be granted for individuals too

Kind regards

Mark

Thanks Mark, but when you have students commencing 365 days a year you end up with a lot of groups over lots of courses very quickly.

TAFE colleges have often over 300 qualifications, each having anywhere from 10 to 20 units in each. Worse case scenario would place 6000 moodle courses per year with 365 groups... 2.19 million edits per year... for just one assignment per course wink

The group method would become very cumbersome very quickly.
