Best method for restoring a course to a new server with FTP

We have produced a course which is to be used on the servers of other schools and colleges. We will supply the backup file (around 40MB)  on CDROM. The files size means that FTP is needed to upload. I want to provide instructions to each institution on restoring the course into their Moodle sites. Here is the method I was considering:

  • Create a category and then a course (without altering any settings)
  • Backup the course. This creates the folder and backup folder in moodledata.
  • FTP the backup zip file provided on CDROM to the backup folder just created.
  • Select the existing blank course and click restore.
  • Choose restore for the uploaded backup.
  • Select restore as New Course.
  • The course is now created.
  • Delete the blank course.

Althought the above is not complicated, Is there a simpler, or standard method?

Hi Geoff,

Have you considered simply using FTP to upload the the backup file to the site files folder (named "1") then restoring?
