Using PNGs in Moodle?

Using PNGs in Moodle?

OK, here is a newbie question, so please forgive my ignorance.  I was just wondering is there a way that we can use PNGs in Moodle as opposed to GIFs?  I applaud the work of Michael, Jean-Marc, and the others who have contributed the Nuvola iconsets; however, I was wondering if there is a way that we could use the same size PNG files instead of converting them to GIFs?  If this has already been discussed in another thread, I'm sorry about duplicating a topic.

Thanks,
Muata

I believe at the moment the names of most of the icons used in Moodle are hardcoded in the HTML as name.gif. This makes it tricky to replace them with any other kind of image.

However, since the main advantage of PNG over GIF is alpha transparency, and this is currently unsupported in Internet Explorer, I can't see any great need for this at the moment. Any suitable PNG should be easily converted to GIF, though maybe I'm missing something.
