There are a couple of plugins that might be of some use. One is called Newsletter but it is in V1.0 so it may be a little under-ripe yet. The other is called Noticeboard Forum which allows you to use a course like a long, long noticeboard. 

Ordinarily the Front Page Forum is useful for announcements, but I have also used the Events block to advertise news as well.
