I have been at this a while and searched all the forums and am at the point where I could use some help. We have a course set up in Moodle 2.6 that is actually a set of courses, one of which includes a news forum for announcements. We're using a 3rd party script called aMember to enroll students into 11 courses at once upon purchase. New users can enroll at any time as this is an asynchronous course.
Everything works great except that when a new user enrolls they are not auto-subscribed to the news forum. This is important because we use this news forum for key announcements of webinars and events that are of great value to new students (in fact, they are paying extra for them), so we wouldn't want them to miss these announcements.
Here is what I have tried so far, with news forum in the "auto-subscription" mode:
- Enroll new student, check the news forum: student shows up as a "potential subscriber," but is not subscribed.
- Create a new standard forum with auto-subscription mode, enroll new student: result is same as #1.
- Delete news forum, create new news forum (by adding a latest news block), repeat test: same result.
- Check permissions, new student permissions for mod/forum:allowforcesubscribe set to "yes."
I have read there may be an issue with a forum created first as "optional subscription" then later changed to "auto-subscription." But test #3 should take care of that I should think.
I have also read about issues with groups, but we are not using groups in this course.
The only other thing I can think of is that this is a course set up for the purpose of hosting this news forum, and that's it. (This is by design, some users pay for these Webinars and Webinar announcements, others don't.) So there are no grades and no completion tracking. That shouldn't matter, but...
