They're more than likely looking for ways to make their advertising, PR, and marketing more effective. Governments and spy agencies in particular are very interested in using affective influence against politically active individuals and groups; they absolutely love Facebook and other social networking services.
One concern about this kind of manipulation is that anyone you are "friends" with online but have never met personally, e.g. a "friend" of a real friend, may not be who or what you think they are.
to be honest, I struggle with literature...over 10 years old (your second link) I mean how relevant is it for 2014?
Things move on-do they not? Otherwise, why are we not still using Morse Code-perfect mode for communication in my view
