Thanks Gordon, will give it another go. BTW. I tried to get it to work on my Mac but I couldn't get the interface files to load: wrong extension and results in error and messed up interface. I was under the impression that it works on Mac too.
Tom
Hi Tom,
I am not sure what you mean by "it" in the phrase "I tried to get it to work on my Mac".
When I create HP nowadays, I generally just create the basic HP xml files on my Mac or PC and then upload the files to Moodle to see what they look like there. You can choose the JMatch Sort output format when you administer the quiz through Moodle. As long as the filename of the JMatch xml file ends in ".jmt", then Moodle will recognize it and display it using the JMatch Sort output format that you require.

Hi Gordon,
What I meant is that I tried to follow the instructions for JMatch Sort on my Mac, but it didn't work. The instructions specified that you need to go to "Change interface window" and find a file that was in the JMatch package. But the Mac does not accept the .hif files that come in the JMatch Sort package, and there are no .xml files in that package. So I can't get it (JMatch Sort) to work on my Mac.
"create the basic HP xml files on my Mac"
I don't know how to create xml files and what that does.

Tom
Hi Tom,
thanks for clarifying. I think those intructions come from Stan's (excellent!) site, don't they. Perhaps Stan has more detailed info, but I recall that the Mac version of Hot Potatoes doesn't work *exactly* the same as the Windows version, so some of the functionality may be different.
I was tryng to create a Japanese version of the interface once, and I remember being puzzled that it didn't seem to be possible on the Mac version of HP.
Do you have access to a Windows machine? Could you load up a Windows emulator on your Mac. For example, I have had some good results with VMWare Fusion. I keep it on my Mac just so that I can run the Windows version of HP.

Gordon
Hi Tom,
I do the same as Gordon except that I use Virtual Box to be able to run Hot Potatoes on my Mac. I've no idea if Virtual Box is better or worse than VMWare Fusion - anybody have an opinion? The Java version of Hot Potatoes that runs on Mac has been in beta for years and there are no plans to develop it. It's much easier to make Hot Potatoes exercises on Windows and you can make WebRhubarb, WebSequitur and Quandry exercises too.
Cheers,
Glenys
Thanks Gordon and Glenys for that info. I don't have regular access to a Windows machine so I'm going to go with VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box.

Hi Tom,
I work on a Win machine and cannot test if and how .hif files work on a Mac. Sorry about that! .hif files are useful, but not a must so that you can create a JMatch Sort exercise.
Multimedia and flash players shouldn't be standing in the way either.
Cheers
Stan
Hi Gordon,
I'm still having no luck. I tried the Standard and Bootstrap themes and it's the same. I preview the HTM file before uploading and it's fine, but doesn't show up properly in either Hotpot or Taskchain. I've tried different settings but completely lost. Any ideas what could be the problem?
Tom
Hi Tom,
please could you add your JMatch Sort file to the Moodle 2.6 course on my testing server so that we can look at it together:
Hi Gordon,
Tried but could not log in with that username/PW. Could you check that they are right.
Best,
Tom
Sorry about that Tom. It seems the PW had changed. I have reset it now, so please add your JMatch Sort as a TaskChain activity and let me know how you get on. regards, Gordon
Ok Gordon, I uploaded the file as a Hotpot. I'll be using this type of activity in the Hotpot module in my courses. But the result is the same for Taskchain. Best, Tom
Thanks for uploadin the exercise to my testing server, Tom
I notice you have uploaded the html file. Unfortunately, neither HotPot nor TaskChain can recognize the html file of a JMatch Sort quiz. Both modules detect it is merely as an ordinary html file.
Therefore, could you also please upload the jmt file for your quiz, and set its output format to "JMatch Sort from xml" and see if that works better.
thanks
Gordon
Hi Gordon,
It worked! I didn't know about having to set the 'output format' that way. Also, the reason I use the .htm file is that I when I was uploading the orginal fille (eg., .jcl) the Hotpot/Taskchain would override the .css Facelift and so I followed the instructions to use the .htm file.
Tom
Hi Gordon,
There is an additional problem with the column headings in the Gourmet them. I also tested in Bootstrap 3 which Gourmet is based on and it's the same. I reduced the length of the headings to single numbers and now the columns are too narrow for the draggable elements.
Regards,
Tom
Tom,
thanks for confirming that your JMatch Sort works as expected when run from the jmt file, using the "JMatch Sort from xml" output format.
I have fixed TaskChain to recognize the JMatch Sort html files, so you should now be able to load up your html file on my testing server and it'll work as you expect.
The layout issues you report can be fixed by altering the CSS. It is a little fiddley, and you probably need a decent CSS analysis tool such as Google Chrome's right-click + "Inspect Element", or the Firebug plugin for Firefox.
Once you have worked out which styles you need to change, there are a number of places you can insert them:
I can imagine that you may not know what any of those are or how they could be used. If so, please let me know, and in due course I will try to explain what I mean.
regards
Gordon
It is almost year since this post.
Just wanted to tell you that I tested the Jmatch_Sort on Moodle 2.8 on my home server that I set for testing; the exercise that I reproduced (thanks a million to Glenys Hanson for her ideas!) work perfectly fine, with embedded sound players.
Here is a screenshot for how it looks like in Moodle 2.85.

P.S. herewith the debug info on an attempt to import a Jmatch_sort exercise into the question bank of moodle 2.85
Hi Christopher,
I'm glad to hear that your JMatch works in the HotPot module for Moodle
Regarding import those JMatch questions into the Moodle question bank, I'm afraid that as it is, the amount of HTML code required to specify the media players in your JMatch makes the text too long for field in the database which holds that information.

Gordon
