I noticed that we too have spurious folders appearing in the files section of courses related to the forums. There doesn't seem to be anything in them and they all start with 'modata' just like when a Scrom course is imported, not that I can see a connection between the two items.
We are on a windows server with apache.
I don't think this will help you much other than to identify that we have a similar issue, so unless we both had bad installs.......
I'm going with leave them alone for the present and see if they explode later.
