Forum E-mails Before Course Opens

Forum E-mails Before Course Opens

I'm wondering if e-mails will go out if an instructor puts up a forum post prior to the course open date. Do the e-mails go out immediately? Do they go out after the course opens? Do they go out at all?

Thanks,

Gary

Gary, I'm going to hypothesise here, which is quite useless actually.

I'd say only activity when the course is open is reflected in e-mails to subscribed participants.  Prior to opening and after opening, no dice.

But of course, I may be wrong, and you may need to do a test.

In my organisation, I found that messages posted in the News Forum DID go out to students, even when the course was Unavailable.

  • Students were already enrolled.
  • Students messaging preference for forums was "Digest".
  • The Forum was visible.
  • Forum subscription was "Forced"
  • Course availability was "Hide"

The normal cron processes on Moodle only send out messages created today to students who are currently enrolled. Later enrolments don't get a flood of email: they have to read the Forum, to catch up on what has already been said.
