Any chance of attaching code like <body oncontextmenu="return false;"> or similar to the pages to disable the right-click? (I can login as admin and currently using moodle 2.5.2)
You know what I am hoping for - just add a bit of inconvenience to users who want to easily download the course materials. I understand there is no fool proof way but just a small trick will still be appreciated.

As you already know that it's a bad idea then why pursue it?
I hope you don't mind me being blunt, but if your teaching model depends on people being inconvenienced by being prevented from downloading materials then I might suggest it isn't a very good model...

You could create public (outside Moodle) protected pages with the links to the materials. Yes, some extra work and definitely inconvenient, but it could work.
It might work on users who don't have browser plugins like:
or
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cacheviewer/
or simply type about:cache into the address bar,
and many, many others.

I am researching a similar solution to this problem .
This script is very useful, but does not solve my problem.
I want to block the right click within the video preview pluggin (the html one, not the quicktime).
Student at this time can right click and 'download file as' the video.
Could you please point me a direction to solve this?
