Quiz Total Marks Incorrect - Including Entire Question Bank

Quiz Total Marks Incorrect - Including Entire Question Bank

We are on Moodle 2.5.3+

We have a quiz with incorrect total marks. It is 121, when it should be 31 (one question has no value because it is a label). There are 31 questions, each worth 1 point each.

The result is that students are being given .41 of a point instead of 1.0 point for questions.

We found out where the 121 number is coming from; it's the total number of questions in the 3 banks used to create this quiz. We believe this happened when the quiz was duplicated because the original does not show this problem.

Students have already begun taking the quiz, and we have no idea how to fix it.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,

Aaron

Re: Quiz Total Marks Incorrect - Including Entire Question Bank

A colleague and I were just discussing this and we recalled that the one other time the Total Marks were incorrect like this was when we imported a quiz from another class. So, it appears to be caused in the duplicate and import process.

This happened only after our upgrades in January. 1.9 to 2.0, then to 2.3

Yes, this problem happens as a combination of old bad data, and backup/restore.

The problem is to do with the data in the mdl_quiz.questions column, and in the mdl_quiz_question_instances table.

In this case I would guess that you have extra rows in quiz_question_instances that are not acutally used in the quiz.

If you can find those extra rows and delete them, then the problem will go away.

I assume you are able and willing to edit things directly in the database.

(Well, to get all the scores correctly re-computed, you may need to go to the Edit quiz page, and change Marked out of: for one question to another value, and then change it back. That cuases all the scores to be recomputed.)

Re: Quiz Total Marks Incorrect - Including Entire Question Bank

Hi Tim,

We faced same issue and tried methods that you suggested but it didn't work out.

Is there a patch or any other method available in fixing this issue ?

We are using Moodle 2.5.1 version.

We are using backed up restored course and using 8 questions in a quiz taken from a question bank category which has 18 questions. The total marks show up 18 (fetching the total count from that particular question bank category) instead 8.

Any ideas in solving this question is appreciated.

Thanks,

Sushil

There are several hundred, or thousand, patches available in a nice neat packages called Moodle 2.5.6 or Moodle 2.7.
