Categories not included in totals when "Aggregate including subcategories" is selected

Categories not included in totals when "Aggregate including subcategories" is selected

When "Aggregate including subcategories" is checked in all of the boxes below, the first category total is included in the final grade and the second category total isn't (the third category does not yet have any grades in it). When I uncheck "Aggregate including subcategories," as shown below, everything works as it should.

Why would this be? Don't I want subcategories to be aggregated?

I would never use Aggregate including subcategories, don't even know what its intended purpose was, know that it universally screws up scores and disabled it at our school.
