Testing Self-Enroll

Testing Self-Enroll

I am new to Moodle.  I have downloaded  to my laptop for testing and development (before migrating to a hosted site).

ISSUE: I need to test specific functions, but not sure how.

BACKGROUND: In that I have Moodle on my laptop (localhost), I have no URL to access my test course.  I am trying to test the “self-enrolment” feature (e.g., a prospective student finds the course online, goes to the website, and selects a course).

QUESTION: Does anyone know how to test self-enrolment on a stand-alone, non-Internet-linked system?

Your question doesn't really make sense to me. I assume you are actually asking how to "test" email-based authentication?

If you want to test something that involves emails being sent and you have no internet connection then you can't do it. Well, you could use 'local' email but, as I suspect you are using Windows, this won't be straightforward (it's easy-ish on Linux).

Anyway - you don't need to test it, it's been tested, it works.

However, I suspect I am missing something...

just use a local server software install that supports php/mysql like XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org) and use it locally through http://localhost/...  Then you can "test" anything you want to.

Re: Testing Self-Enroll... next step!

Thanks, Stephen, for your guidance ... but also for your allowance!  I'm so new I can hardly spell M-O-O-D-L-E!

I had a computer buddy load XAMPP and setup my localhost account.  Now ... I'm on my own!

I want people to be able to find my course online (at my website www.theAIOE.org) and self-enroll.  So, with NO contact from me, only someone discovering the course, I'd like to be able to review and enroll.

Now... to the test.  I have setup PayPal.  When I am logged in I see it (the PayPal icon by the course name).

How can I run this test: Someone finds the course online, clicks on it, reviews it, wants to enroll?

Thanks again, Stephen!  I truly appreciate your help.

Rick

I assume you're using the Paypal enrollment plugin - have you read:

http://docs.moodle.org/26/en/Paypal_enrolment

I thought you just wanted to test self enrollment (non-paid).  If you want to test live with Paypal, your Moodle will need to be on a domain that Paypal can connect back to to send the IPN notice of payment to Moodle in order to enroll the user in the course.  You could do this using a local XAMPP install if you put your computer on the web by doing port forwarding to your computer from your ISP router for port 80.  I'm not sure that Paypal IPN will use an ip address as opposed to a domain, I've never tried that, but you could try doing it using your assigned ISP address (http://whatismyip.com) to test.

I'd suggest setting up a paypal sandbox account for testing it out.

It should work fine - it's been used a lot by others.

Re: Testing Self-Enroll... next step!

Hi Rick,

Depending on who you are using for the hosting the email settings are easily configured within Moodle and "just works" right out of the box.

Have you moved that step forward and  installed Moodle on your website as yet?  Just give it a go, if you set it up as www.theAIOE.org/moodle, for example, you're unlikely to make any mistakes that cannot be just deleted.

Alternatively you could look for a Moodle Partner local to you or advertise on www.PeoplePerHour.com or www.elance.com for someone to set it up for you if you're feeling too far out of your depth.

HTH

Dave
