How to moodle for a very practical course?

Hi,

I need some ideas and suggestions.

Currently, there are teachers from the course: Culinary Arts, Diet and Nutrition, Pastry Art are interested in using Moodle. These courses are very practical-based-means most of the time are spent in the kitchen class.

I would to know how to make Moodle relevant to such courses.

Thank you so much. big grin

OK Zoe,

a few ideas follow.  It sounds as though the use of a variety of media might be a way to move forward.  See the following moodle docs link:

docs.moodle.org/26/en/working_with_media

I have seen courses of a practical nature, for example, about photography and neuropathology, which focus on application of skills and inclusion of associated information, facts, stepped-instructions for knowledge development. Hope these elements compare with your purpose.  If so, then such courses have utilised the regular glossaries, forums and feedback items...with feedback used for evalutions, introductions/getting to know each other type purposes and to share factual info.

Activities have often used a sequenced approach, such as lessons where students can provide narrative accounts of topic related engagement in their setting or studio/lab whatever, with pictures uploaded to databases also.

Lessons have also included stepped-explanatory instructions where the facilitator has included flash presentations, at times, too.  The quiz feature has been used to enable students to consolidate knowledge and understanding (formative)....and for summative assessment purposes among other uses.

A portfolio type assignement can also be included....using the database function-simple word docs can  suffice with text and pictures if need be.

In  terms of resources, as well as the facilitaor uploading video clips, students can also upoload their own resources/video and I think audio too.

Finally do see the potentiality of the Big Blue Button plug-in for face- to- face communication, might add value to the learning and teaching experience, the following thread may be informative/provide some further detail about some nuts and bolts for teaching/learning with Moodle  and includes a bit about BBB

https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=256942

BBB can be integrated within 1.9 up to 2.6 moodle and records as well as plays back see:

https://moodle.org/plugins/browse.php?list=set&id=2

hope helpful smile
