I tested changing a student Group and found that the student kept the grade associated with the old group. If however, I edited the grade for the new group then the student received the grade for the new group.
So you could move a student in groups (either within a grouping or ignoring groupings) after you have graded an assignment as long as you don't regrade the assignment.
