Password Problems in install

I have eventually managed ( after a few hours of trying ) to install and run Moodle 2.6.on my W7 PC. However, during the install something went wrong and I am now unable to log into my page as an administrator. I have deleted and reinstalled but now I go straight to localhost page and cannot log in. How do I reset my password ( admin ) so I can continue to finish setting up the page.

anyone willing to help  please note:! step by step instructions needed, I am NOT a programmer, I am a self employed ESL teacher with almost ZERO knowledge of platforms.

I am going round in circles as if I click on forgotten password I am redirected to "contact the admin " and as that's me, that's absolutely no help what-so-ever...........

Someone, somewhere, take pity on me and help me out!

Most folks here are not paid for their time and effort to support moodle; if this was a paid-for application with professional staff, I would consider your comments and concerns to be valid.

Many of those here run Moodle on a dedicated server, on a variety of operating systems - so a good portion would not even know where to start assisting you with troubleshooting this problem.

Where I work, we use Virtualbox to create a 'container' for a virtualized (aka appliance, VM, virtual PC, PC image ) edition of Moodle. This sounds complex, but is in fact much easier than a scratch install into your desktop PC. The virtual image is fully self-contained with operating system, web server (ie Apache) and moodle ready to run without having to configure. If you break something, all you have to do is delete the Virtual image and start over.

STEPS

Download & install Virtualbox :

Download Moodle appliance (virtual image):

Bitnami: http://bitnami.com/stack/moodle/virtual-machine

Turnkey: http://www.turnkeylinux.org/moodle

Create new VM container and use one of those images (there are many easy to follow guides for doing this - much easier than a from-scratch Moodle install)

Before you do anything else, CLONE the virtual machine (appliance/image/etc) and work with the copy version. When you break it, just delete clone and start with new clone. Another advantage to using a VM is that the host software allows you to make snapshots, so you can roll-back any changes when mistakes are made.

There is a HUGE amount of time you will have to invest in learning Moodle, but with skipping the whole installation routine, you can focus on Moodle itself.

Cheers

Ken

Picture of Particularly helpful Moodlers

Yep ... we all begin somewhere.   But the most amazing people throughout history (that's what  I used to teach) have a high failure quotient - they may fail 99 times ... but at least they have learned what doesn't work!   And so it might true of you (right now) ... don't give up!  That's not what you desire your students to learn, is it? http://topachievement.com/michaelnorwood.html

Ok, so can't (just now) install Moodle on Windows, so have you thought about an alternative solution?   Google 'free moodle hosting' and see what you get.   Or, check out one of the many hosting providers that offer Moodle as an installable app with just a few clicks and filling out some boxes.   Those will be on shared hosting so you might not get the latest and greatest version of Moodle, but think you'll get the tools you can use to start.  SiteGround is one: http://www.siteground.com/search.htm?q=Moodle (I don't work for them)
