Newbie question: getting subscribers to auto-subscribe using email - stmp??

Hi there,

I'm utterly new to this. I've used moodle through my university for a few years, but have just bought and set up a new moodle site: clarkecroquet.com

I've written a couple of quizzes, and want people to be able to try them. But it turns out people need to be subscribed (i.e. not guests) to be able to do this.

So I tried to set up authentication whereby new users are sent a subscription email. But that didn't work when a user tried to subscribe. He got a message saying that the site couldn't send him an email, and clicked more, and got:

"The error message 'Tried to send you an email but failed!' is most likely due to an incorrect SMTP server configuration."

This sounds pretty reasonable... since I have no idea what an STMP server is, or how to configure it sad

Please can someone help me to fix this so that new users can subscribe to my site and try out the quizzes?

Many thanks in advance,

Jenny

p.s. sorry if this has been asked a million times before - I found one such question over an hour ago, haven't found it since, and completely didn't understand the question on it. Please be patient. I don't understand SMTP, but I can write awesome quizzes smile

Welcome, and please do not apologize for asking a question, it is, after all, the only way we learn.

The short answer is that if it is a configuration problem, ask your service provider for the details of the mail server address and port, It is likely to be something like mail.provider.com/your/site/mailbox or some such. Put that address into your email settings page.

Here is a discussion you might find helpful, https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=202667 which will give you some idea of the questions you may need to ask, and how to implement the appropriate settings.

PS. For the moment, or until you get used to how things are set up here, if you want, you might think about asking questions in the General Help forum. Questions in the specialist forums are sometimes overlooked if they do not strictly relate to the forum topic, or the moderator may move them to another forum, very occasionally but it does happen. Your question has more to do with emails than it does with Forums, and, this is the confusing bit, this forum is about the Forum Module in Moodle, a forum about Forums, if you like, and email probs are in other forums.
